Former president arrested surrender passport and bailed out


Former Zambia President Rupiah Banda was arrested yesterday in connection to oil deal with a Nigeria firm that smells corruption. It was alleged that when he was in power, Banda stole more than ten million dollars. Banda became president after the death of Levy Mwanawasa. By then he was a vice president who under Zambia Constitution had to assume power after the death of president. Since taking power, current president Michael Cobra Banda has been conducting anti-corruption crusade. According to sources from Zambia,after being arrested, Banda was interrogated by police and released after surrendering his passport. Zambia stripped its presidents of blind immunity.
Banda becomes the second former president to be arraigned by authorities after the late Fredrick Chiluba who was charged for corruption.
